The case for the second screening
Watching a film twice is not indulgence. It is the only way to see what the first viewing hid from you.
Placeholder post — replaced with real writing in #20.
A first viewing is spent working out what happens. You cannot see how a film is built while you are still asking what it is about.
What changes
The second time, plot stops being a question. Suddenly the cut is visible, the score stops being wallpaper, and you notice the thing in the corner of frame that the director put there on purpose.
- The first viewing belongs to the story
- The second belongs to the film
- There is rarely a case for a third
Where this fails
Not every film survives it. Some are a single good trick, and watching the trick twice is how you discover it was only ever a trick.
That is still worth knowing.
